DHG Donates 593,464 Pounds of Food in Fifth Annual Count the Cans Campaign – — Over 4,800 Cans of Food Donated in Central Virginia –
July 19th, 2016

Richmond, VA., July 18, 2016 — For its Fifth Annual Count the Cans food drive, Dixon Hughes Goodman (DHG) donated 593,464 pounds of canned food and 1,150 service hours to local hunger relief organizations across its 12-state footprint over two weeks. In total, the firm has donated a total of 3,795,814 pounds of food over five years through Count the Cans.

In addition to DHG’s collection of canned goods, dollars and volunteer hours for hunger relief organizations, the firm responded to the tragic Orlando shootings and West Virginia floods, which occurred in the midst of Count the Cans, by extending the giving campaign by one week and incorporating dollar donations for the OneOrlando Fund and the American Red Cross West Virginia Region. The DHG Foundation offered to match employee and partner donations, and in total, DHG and the DHG Foundation donated $36,742 between the two organizations.

“During DHG’s Fifth Annual Count the Cans food drive, our professionals give of their time and personal donations to support our community.  DHG works to fight hunger by giving back to local organizations like the FeedMore and the Chesterfield Food Bank.  We feel it’s our responsibility to help families, local children and homebound seniors who rely on these hunger-relief organizations,” said Paul Thompson, DHG Managing Partner of the Central Virginia market.

In the DHG Richmond and Chester offices, employees donated more than 1,850 cans to the Chesterfield Food Bank and donated over 2,950 cans of food to the Central Virginia Food Bank (FeedMore) in addition to a monetary donation of more than $1,900.  Forty DHG employees in the market volunteered to assist the Chesterfield Food Bank by organizing food donations.

“I am proud to see our DHG team rally together around such great causes with such passion and energy,” says Matt Snow, Chief Executive Officer. “By incorporating donations for the OneOrlando Fund and the American Red Cross West Virginia Region into our annual giving campaign, we were able to offer financial support to victims and their families in the wake of two unspeakable tragedies. Supporting our communities is an essential part of our firm culture, and we will continue to live our values and show our support to our broader Florida and West Virginia communities in the weeks ahead as they show their strength and resilience.”

Count the Cans:

DHG employees and partners donated a total of 593,464 pounds of food as part of the 2016 Count the Cans campaign. The firm strategically hosts its annual food drive during summer months to help food banks and hunger relief organizations stock their shelves while kids are out of school and without nutritional school meals. With these organizations always in need of protein-rich options, DHG incorporated “Tuna Tuesday” into its 2016 campaign, incorporating an intra-office competition to see which market could donate the most tuna. Similarly, the firm collected 12,020 pounds of pet food on “Pet Food Day” for food banks and local humane society chapters to distribute.

OneOrlando Fund:

In the wake of the Pulse nightclub tragedy, DHG and the DHG Foundation sought ways in which they could offer financial support to the victims and their grieving families. Through the OneOrlando Fund, a project of Strengthen Orlando Inc., DHG and the DHG Foundation donated a total of $14,742 to support the community.

American Red Cross West Virginia Region:

When catastrophic flooding wreaked havoc on various areas across West Virginia, DHG employees, partners and the DHG Foundation began gathering donations for the American Red Cross West Virginia Region and its efforts to provide shelter and relief for victims. In total, the firm and the DHG Foundation donated $22,000, which Rick Slater, DHG Western Mid-Atlantic Managing Partner, presented to the American Red Cross West Virginia Region on Wednesday, July 6.
