Perhaps musical theatre is more your style. Whatever you enjoy, Averett’s Arts@Averett series offers this and more. Averett University is excited to invite you to check out and join the University in celebrating the arts with its 2018-19 Arts@Averett lineup, which includes the 1859 Coffeehouse Lecture Series. The first event is in just a few weeks and events run through April. Ticket pricing varies, and some events are free. All events are open to the public. Following is the list of events for 2018-19 season: “Pinkalicious” September 13-14, 7 p.m.; September 15, 2 p.m. The Averett Theatre for Young People’s Series is pleased to promote “Pinkalicious.” Based on the Pinkalicious books by Victoria Kann and Elizabeth Kann, it is designed to encourage children to explore the arts and develop their creativity. Pinkalicious encourages children as they imagine how the world looks through her artful eye. Flute and Piano Recital by Janet Phillips and Michael Rowland September 21, 7 p.m. “Caesar & Cleo” October 18-20, 7 p.m. The Averett Theatre Department presents “Caesar & Cleo.” With a hip-hop chorus providing narration, the wily slave Colitus angles to gain his freedom while guiding his master, the great Julius Caesar, through the intrigues and plots that threaten Caesar’s very life. Fall Student Art Show October 26-November 26 Russian Renaissance October 26, 7:30 p.m. Averett is proud to sponsor the Danville Concert Association’s Russian Renaissance. Through stunning performances of everything from tango to folk to jazz, Russian Renaissance is redefining the possibilities of their traditional Russian folk instruments. AU Cougar Band POPS Concert November 9, 7 p.m. Cabaret November 16-17 A collection of Broadway show tunes as performed by the Averett Theatre Department. Averett Celebrates Christmas November 29, 7 p.m. The Averett Music Department renews the tradition of “Averett Celebrates Christmas” with a collaboration of student and community performers. Join us to awaken your Christmas spirit. “Our Town” February 21-23, 7 p.m. The Averett Theatre Department will perform the classic three-act play, “Our Town” by American playwright Thornton Wilder. It tells the story of the fictional American small town of Grover’s Corners between 1901 and 1913 through the everyday lives of its citizens. Winston-Salem State University Singing Rams February 28, 6 p.m. Arts@Averett is proud to welcome back the Winston-Salem State University Choir to wrap up Black History Month. The Singing Rams are the oldest student organization on the campus of Winston-Salem State University. Little Bread Hen Puppet Show March 15, 7 p.m. Inspired by the classic tale of The Little Red Hen, this version reveals the truth about what really happened that fateful day when a chicken decided to bake a loaf of bread. Were the other farm animals just lazy or was there something else stewing in the barnyard? Spring Student Art Show March 18-April 21 “First Date: The Musical” April 4-6, 7 p.m.; April 7, 2 p.m. The Averett Theatre Department presents “First Date,” a musical written by Austin Winsberg and music and lyrics by Alan Zachary and Michael Weiner. Based around the concept of a blind date, it will prove to be a fun and interesting look into contemporary dating! AU Cougar Band Spring Concert April 12, 7 p.m. Averett Singers & Handbell Concert April 14, 2:30 p.m. COFFEEHOUSE LECTURE SERIES Dr. Marc Muneal Dr. Marc Muneal, associate professor of English, originally hails from Chaguanas, Trinidad and Tobago, but has lived in the U.S. for 18 years. He will present a multi-disciplinary take on the history of East Indians in the West Indies, interweaving a short cooking demonstration with information about music, literature and performance. Linda Lemery presents The Dr. Betty Heard Christmas Readings for Children Linda Lemery, library circulation manager, is a first-generation American on her Danish father’s side and second-generation on her Polish mother’s side. Lemery has led the Betty Heard Christmas Readings for the Coffeehouse Lectures for several years and this year, she will focus on international Christmas tales. Carly Pearce Carly Pearce, executive director of student services for Averett’s Graduate and Professional Studies program, was born and raised in Brighton on the Southeast coast of England. Pearce moved to America in 2001 to start her educational journey at Northeastern State University in Oklahoma where she played soccer for four years. She came to Averett as the women’s head soccer coach and moved on to her current position. Pearce will present on cultures and customs from her home country. Dr. Michelle Liu Dr. Michelle Liu came to Moscow, Idaho as a full-time doctoral student and studied sport pedagogy at the University of Idaho in 2003. Immediately after receiving her Ph.D. in 2008, Averett offered Liu a teaching faculty position and she moved to Danville. Dr. Liu’s home is Miaoli in Taiwan, R.O.C, and she will share insights on cultures and customs from her home country.
