Top Road Course Names New President and COO, as well as a Chief Strategy Officer

DANVILLE, Virginia – Dec. 12, 2018 – VIRginia International Raceway, one of North America’s premier road courses, is excited to announce the promotions of two long-term executive team members. Kerrigan Smith has been named President and Chief Operating Officer for all of VIR, and Sandie Currie is now the facility’s Chief Strategy Officer.

Smith’s new role expands on his previous position as COO of track operations. In addition to growing VIR with a focus on track renters and maintaining the title as one of the top six roadcourses in the country, Smith will now also oversee all VIR operations, including its one-of-a-kind resort that includes onsite lodging, dining, shooting, karting and more. Smith has been with the VIR team since 2010, and prior to that spent eight years with Synergy Racing, formally G&W Motorsports, working his way up from pit crew to general manager.

Currie has been with VIR for over 15 years, most recently serving as the COO of VIR’s resort offerings. In her new role as Chief Strategy Officer, she will work closely with owner and CEO Connie Nyholm on developing long-term strategies to ensure VIR’s future growth for decades to come. Leveraging her love of Virginia and business expertise, Currie currently serves on the Board of the Danville Community College Foundation, Riverview Rotary Club, Halifax Tourism and the Boys & Girls Club of the Danville Area.

“Throughout their combined 25 years of experience at VIR, Kerrigan and Sandie have always been two of the most hardworking people I know,” said Connie Nyholm, owner and CEO of VIR. “They are both so deserving of these promotions, and I’m thrilled to continue working side-by-side with them as we continue to make VIR better than ever before. We have so many exciting things to look forward to in 2019 and I can’t wait to see all they do for our continued success.”

These promotions bring an exciting close to another prosperous year for the track and as VIR gears up for the 2019 season. VIR recently unveiled its upcoming spectator schedule, kicking off in April with several fan-favorite races and new additions, including HyperFest in May, the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship in August and the SCCA National Championship Runoffs in October.
