A Message from the Virginia Chamber of Commerce
March 18th, 2020

As the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) situation continues to develop, the Virginia Chamber is focused on working with our government partners to ensure your business and your employees have the necessary information to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The safety of our employees, customers and others, as well as the need to stop the spread of this illness, is a top priority for businesses as we balance the need to meet customer and business demands.

At this critical time, it is imperative that members of the business community stand united in their response and advance recommendations that protect the wellbeing of our workers and families and ensure the financial health and longevity of our businesses and employers. Earlier today, I sent a letter to members of the Virginia Congressional Delegation regarding COVID-19 and the impact this outbreak could have on the health and safety of the business community and all Virginians. In this letter, I have urged our Delegation to consider and enact several proposals to assist businesses and employees during this time. You can read the letter here.

On the state level, Governor Ralph Northam and the State Health Commissioner issued a public health emergency order prohibiting more than 10 patrons in restaurants, fitness centers, and theaters. This order gives local and state law enforcement the ability to enforce the ban announced by the Governor, if needed.

We all play a vital role in not only preventing the spread of COVID-19 but also enacting everyday safety and wellness precautions to keep our workforce healthy. That is why the Virginia Chamber has decided to cancel, postpone, or transition to a digital platform all programming and signature events previously scheduled to occur within the next eight weeks. A comprehensive list of our event updates can be found below and additional information will be provided as it is made available.

As information continues to develop, the Virginia Chamber will ensure the COVID-19 Resource Center is supplied with the most up-to-date information and we encourage the business community to utilize strategies to protect the health of our workforce and all Virginians. Virginia businesses should be prepared to prioritize critical operations, establish teleworking policies (when possible), and coordinate with state and local health officials.

We will continue to monitor this situation closely on behalf of the business community, provide regular updates through our resource center, and encourage members of the business community to reach out to our team with any additional questions or resource requests. Please keep us advised on how your business is being impacted. These communications can be directed to policy@vachamber.com.

Best Regards,

Barry E. DuVal
