GTL Fusion Services Reveal Financial Crimes Within Correctional Facilities
November 4th, 2021

Fraud, money laundering, and other illegal financial activity can be solved and even prevented through intelligence monitoring

 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

FALLS CHURCH, Va. – Nov. 4, 2021 –  GTL, a trusted partner that connects those affected by incarceration with the resources and support necessary to achieve success, announced that GTL Fusion Services and its intelligence analysts are identifying fraudulent activity and helping to stop financial crimes from happening every day. In 2020, GTL’s 150 analysts worked on over 7,000 cases, many of which were financial crimes that affected individuals, facilities, and government agencies.

Financial crimes may involve a variety of means, including fraudulent benefit applications, and may involve multiple parties. Often the investigation of these matters involves forensic examinations and review of information from multiple sources.

“With the increase in benefits during the pandemic, we have helped identify a lot of fraud related to state unemployment, pandemic unemployment assistance, pandemic emergency assistance funds, disability programs, and more over the past two years,” said Mitch Volkart, vice president, intelligence solutions.

GTL has worked closely with facility investigators as well as the U.S. Department of Labor and other relevant agencies to ensure prosecution for these fraud-related crimes. Recent high-profile cases of COVID-19 Relief and Unemployment fraud have brought more attention to these types of schemes. Increasingly prevalent across the country, one analyst recently identified 13 different schemes related to Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA), the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), and state unemployment fraud at one facility.

“With its combination of people, data, and technology, GTL Fusion Services offers a holistic approach to stopping crime, including illegal financial activity,” concluded Volkart. “Our analysts are trained to identify anomalies present in the millions of voice recordings, transactions, messages, visitation logs, and more that they examine day after day. If it helps a facility become safer and helps more individuals focus on rehabilitation, then we have done our job well.”
