Norfolk, VA (January 18, 2018) – Vandeventer Black LLP is pleased to announce its 2018 Executive Board. Partners Deborah M. Casey and James R. Harvey continue and Partners Edward J. Powers, Mark S. Brennan, Sr., and Michael L. Sterling (Managing Partner) were re-elected. The board is responsible for the governance and operations of the firm.
Deborah M. Casey’s practice focuses on representing common interest communities, creditors, and commercial property owners for almost 30 years. She is one of only a few attorneys in the region and country who practice Community Association Law. Casey represents a large roster of community associations on a variety of legal issues, including drafting, interpreting, amending and enforcing covenants, as general and corporate counsel, as well as in dispute resolution, construction, financing, assessment collection and insurance concerns.
James R. Harvey also serves as President of the Norfolk & Portsmouth Bar Association and Chair of the Board of Zoning Appeals for the City of Norfolk. Harvey has experience handling a broad range of disputes, including construction, surety, government contracts, land use, defective products, professional liability, and business. Harvey regularly appears in state and federal courts and before various arbitration panels representing the needs of contractors, subcontractors, suppliers, owners, developers, engineers, architects, insurers or sureties and their agents.
Edward J. Powers concentrates his practice in maritime, transportation and general litigation. His maritime practice focuses on the representation of ship owners, charterers, and their underwriters, including both domestic and international insurance companies and P & I Clubs. Powers also represents one of the largest Class I railroads in North America.
Mark S. Brennan, Sr. concentrates his practice in health care and medical and professional liability matters. He has over 31 years of trial and litigation experience in state and federal courts. Brennan defends physicians, nurses, hospitals, nursing home/long-term care facilities, physical therapists, dentists, and all other varieties of health care providers against medical malpractice wrongful death and personal injury claims.
Michael L. Sterling is a former Chair of the firm’s Construction and Government Contracts Department. Sterling concentrates his practice on complex projects, regulatory compliance and resolution of disputes for international, national, and local private and government clients. Sterling also serves as an arbitrator and mediator.
