PRSA Hampton Roads Chapter Talks Implicit Bias in Upcoming Workshop
October 3rd, 2019

Norfolk, VA (October 3, 2019) – The Public Relations Society of America, Hampton Roads Chapter, will be hosting a workshop titled “Unconcious Bias? Not me! Yes, you!” with confirmed speaker Paula L. Bazemore on Wednesday, October 16, 2019, at Cox Communications, located at 1341 Crossway Boulevard, Chesapeake, Virginia. This program aims to educate professionals in various industries who are interested in learning more about the topic. Registration is open to members of the PRSA, non-members, and students.

“As PR professionals, our ability to build mutually beneficial relationships between the organizations we serve and our publics is only as good as our understanding and relatability to both of those entities,” said Leila Rice, PRSA-HR member of the Programming and Professional Development Committee. “As the eyes and ears for our organizations and the trusted advisors to our senior leadership, it is critical that we recognize our unconscious biases in order to create more effective messages, communication plans, and inclusive and equitable workplace environments.”

This workshop is intended to provide local Public Relations Professionals with the necessary tools for combating cultural blindspots and social stereotypes. It will also give a better understanding of the differences between diversity and inclusion, as well as guide attendees on evaluating their conscious awareness.

Bazemore is the Hampton Roads Program Manager at the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities (VCIC), an organization that works with schools, businesses, and communities to achieve success through inclusion. In her role, she serves as the link between VCIC and community partners through designing, facilitating, and convening diversity and inclusion workshops.

Additionally, she was among the first group of staff members trained to be Diversity Facilitators in the American Cancer Society’s Mid-Atlantic Division.  For more information or to register, please visit prsahr.org or follow PRSA-HR on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn @PRSAHR.
